چکیده

The objective of this paper is to characterize and analyze the performance of TCP/IP when used over point-to-point protocol (PPP) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) over asymmetric links. This will allow us to gain insight into this new protocol architecture used in the asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) access network and investigate the related quality of service (QoS) issues. Using simulation, we verified the effects of asymmetry on the performance of TCP and additional throughput degradation caused by segmentation at the ATM layer. This study was done for unidirectional and bi-directional data transfer using different traffic mixes. We also quantified the improvement in the downstream throughput obtained by delaying the TCP acknowledgements and using TCP/IP header compression. Although these techniques are effective for unidirectional TCP/IP data transfer over asymmetric links, they do not prove as effective for bi-directional traffic, and the problem further exacerbates when ATM enters the scenario. Hence, there is a need for additional enhancements in such scenarios. Further, we modified the existing protocol stack model to implement PPP encapsulation over the ATM adaptation layer (AAL5). We characterized and analyzed the effect of the additional PPP overhead on system performance in terms of throughput degradation and additional delay. We also evaluated the use of TCP/IP header compression for improving performance in presence of PPP encapsulation.

Performance of TCP/IP over ATM over an ADSL

The performance of TCP/IP over ATM over an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) was investigated. Because the bandwidth of an ADSL link can vary over time due to changes in the link’s physical conditions, which degrades TCP performance, we performed simulations for various ATM traffic controls, including available bit rate (ABR) and generic flow control, used to handle variations in the AD...

A new ATM adaptation layer for TCP/IP over wireless ATM networks

This paper describes the design and performance of a new ATM adaptation layer protocol (AAL-T) for improving TCP performance over wireless ATM networks. The wireless links are characterized by higher error rates and burstier error patterns in comparison with the fiber links for which ATM was introduced in the beginning. Since the low performance of TCP over wireless ATM networks is mainly due t...

Traffic Management for TCP/IP over Satellite-ATM Networks

Several Ka-band satellite systems have been proposed that will use ATM technology to seamlessly transport Internet traffic. The ATM UBR, GFR and ABR service categories have been designed for data. However, several studies have reported poor TCP performance over satellite-ATM networks. We describe techniques to improve TCP performance over satellite-ATM networks. We first discuss the various des...

Tcp/ip over Atm - Performance Evaluation and Optimisation

The integration of TCP/IP and ATM is a challenging architectural issue in today’s global networks, where the unique properties of ATM technology can be combined with the TCP/IP mature and well-proven protocol suite. A rigorous characterisation of the performance of TCP/IP over ATM can be a powerful tool for the efficient use of both technologies. TCP error and flow control mechanisms were desig...

Performance of TCP / IP Using ATM ABR and UBR

We study the buuering requirements for zero cell loss for TCP/IP over satellite links using the available bit rate (ABR) and unspeciied bit rate (UBR) services of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. For the ABR service, we explore the eeect of feedback delay (a factor which depends upon the position of the bottleneck), the switch scheme used, and background variable bit rate (VBR) traac....
